Asked by iloveyou<3 - Tue Dec 16 19:54:33 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Wi-Fi comes from wireless signals that transfer from wireless router. Your internet company may have given you a wireless one (it'll have antennas) or they may have not (just a simple box.) If you have just a simple box, you can purchase an additional Wi-Fi box for at least $50 from a Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.

How long before wi-fi is everywhere and cell phones use the web to connect instead of cell towers?
Q. My bet is that before long wi-fi will be everywhere and we will no longer have to pay a "cell" phone bill. Instead, we will have to pay a "wi-fi" bill and cell phones will be designed to connect using the web. Eventually, I think all televisions and radios will also use the wi-fi for reception.

A. That's optimistic. Who's going to be paying for all that wifi? Most municipalities that planned to set up wifi networks have dialed back or canceled their plans. It's simply too expensive.

A. You would know if you had Wifi, because you would have had to setup it up to work. You can buy a wireless router at BestBuy or any electronics store. Should cost you about $50.

Q. I was under the impression that if there was a WI-FI signal around in the structure you were in, whether it be your own home, a hotel, resturant, anyplace at all. The phone Im planning to purchase has a WI-FI feature. So my question is do you have to pay for the internet on your monthly phone bill?

A. Virtually all carriers require a data plan on wifi enabled phones. As for wifi networks - you can only connect to networks that are unsecured or to which you have the password. In most areas, that's not many.

If I bought a Wi-Fi Usb Connector, Would I be allowed to access wifi from my iTouch wirelessly?
Q. Or is Wi-fi in a house only accessable to people with a wireless router? I also have a Nintendo Wi-Fi USB connector for the Wii, could I download something to allow my iTouch to use that also?
Asked by Sean - Mon Dec 28 15:54:28 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. buying a usb wireless connector only receives wireless signals. It can not create them. You need a wireless router to make the wireless network, and then your PC, wii and ipod can all connect together. PS. a Nintendo Wii has a wi-fi receiver built in so i don't know why you bought one.

Do Wi-Fi connections put a considerable strain on a wired LAN on the same network?
Q. Two computers connected on the same network; one wired ,one wireless. The wired computer is almost always on and when the wireless computer is started, it has been reported that there seems to be a remarkable strain (more than normal) on the network. Do Wi-Fi connections put a considerable strain on a wired LAN on the same network? If yes, what can be done to resolve this?
Asked by Tayo - Mon Oct 5 17:52:19 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A computer connecting via wireless should not put a strain on your network, unless the computer connecting has a virus. It may be trying to connect to a Botnet.

Q. What is the difference between Mobile broadband and Wi-fi? I understand that Wi-fi is accessed free from certain locations, coffee shops, shopping centers etc. So what is the advantage of mobile broadband?
Asked by BlueTuna - Mon Dec 14 16:53:35 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Wifi refers to an Internet connection over a short distance radio signal put out by a wireless router or access point. This is what you normally find in your home. Other then the cost of having the Cable or DSL Internet brought to your house, you do not pay anything more for it. You produce the signal with your own router. It has a range of about 150 feet. This is used in coffee shops and malls because of its short range. It forces you to come into the shop to use it (and maybe you will buy something). Mobile Broadband runs on the cell phone network. Anywhere your cell phone works, so will your Internet. And just like you can get into your car and drive across the country and your cell phone will continue to work by switching from… [cont.]

Q. I have got broadband internet connection with wi-fi router. Though my desktop is connected through cable, I have to keep the router on for accessing the net. Now, I want to ensure that my wi-fi connection is not misused by anybody else nearby, by using a wi-fi card or wi-fi enabled laptop. How to secure the network? Any software?
Asked by Indianfriend82 - Sat Jun 7 16:13:28 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It's understandable that you want to secure your network. Otherwise, your neighbors might be able to access the computers on your network, or they might do something illegal which will then be tracked to your location. First, make sure that you turn on your wifi security protocols, such as WEP. Make sure you use a key that's not easy to break, and change it every so often. WEP is the easiest to crack (thus the changing of the key from time to time), but it takes some know how. If you leave your wifi unencrypted, a side effect will be that people with packet sniffers might be watching your activities. Next, turn on MAC filters. Enter the MAC addresses of all of your stuff (desktops, laptops, PDA, xbox, etc.) That way, the router… [cont.]

What kind of Wi-Fi dongle should I get? Or should I use a router?
Q. I'm at a college that requires you to go to a specific "site" and log in to use the broadband. (Connected through an ethernet cord) I want to use my xbox live here and someone suggested that I should get a usb wi-fi dongle, and from what I understand, I would be using my laptop as a server to network my x-box wirelessly. What kind of wi-fi dongle should I get for this? The ones i've looked up so far only recieve signal, rather than transmitting it. And would a router work just as well as an alternative to wireless?
Asked by Colie - Sat Sep 8 17:54:06 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Do NOT use a router, the college will be using one and if you add a second one it can cause conflicts. What you need is either the wireless card set up in ad hoc mode, you set the ssid and channel manually, along with the tcp/ip information, or a wireless access point and a network switch. This is the simple way. Do not be surprised if anything for xbox is blocked by the college security.

If I have a wi-fi enabled phone, do I get charged data fees when I browse the web through that connection?
Q. I am planning on buying a wi-fi enabled phone [the droid:-)] and was wondering if the wi-fi capability would be a money saver. I have a wireless network at home, and if i can use it to access the internet without using the carrier's mobile web service i am hoping that maybe there are no data charges? Any ideas?
Asked by baseballben07 - Sat Nov 14 21:58:24 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It doesn't save you money. Verizon requires the $30/month data plan with the droid. Wifi gives you faster internet access and allows larger downloads but it doesn't save you money.

A. using wifi on a phone has nothing to do with the phone operator or even reception. (to give you an idea you don't need a sim card for it to work) however the phone will act as a normal user on the network as though a laptop or pc was connected, so it will use up your quota if at home, and will probably cost money if using a wireless outside pay as you go hotspot (you will not be charged unknowlingly though) some places like mcdonalds and starbucks have wifi in all their restaurants for their customers completely free
