Certification refers to the confirmation of certain characteristics of an object, person, or organization. This confirmation is often, but not always, provided by some form of external review, education, or assessment. One of the most common types of certification in modern society is professional certification, where a person is certified as being able to competently complete a job or task, usually by the passing of an examination.

There are two general types of professional certification: some are valid for lifetime, once the exam is passed. Others have to be recertified again after a certain period of time. Also, certifications can differ within a profession by the level or specific area of expertise they refer to. For example, in IT Industry there are different certifications available for Software Tester, Project Manager, and Developer. Similarly, the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology offers three certifications in the same profession, but with increasing complexity.

Certification does not refer to the state of legally being able to practice or work in a profession. That is licensure. Usually, licensure is administered by a governmental entity for public protection purposes and certification by a professional association. However, they are similar in that they both require the demonstration of a certain level of knowledge or ability.

The other most common type of certification in modern society is product certification. This refers to processes intended to determine if a product meets minimum standards, similar to quality assurance.

Organizational certification, such as the Earthcheck environmental and sustainability certification, is usually referred to as accreditation. The differentiation in terms is especially relevant with regards to the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), which is a body that accredits certifying organizations.

Earthcheck benchmarking and certification complies with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC) Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Greenhouse Gas Protocol, and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14064 range of standards for greenhouse gas accounting.

Want to get certified to become a Pharmacy tech, where do I start?
Q. I worked in a pharmacy for 2 years about 14 years ago. It was my favorite job. Now it seem to get into it, they want you to be certified. I would love to get the certification that I need to work in a pharmacy again. But just don't know where to start. There are so many options with online school, what's the best one? Can anyone help me? Is there a pharmacy association you can go through?

A. Pharmacy rules and regulations vary by state. Check the website of your state Board of Pharmacy to find out exactly what the regulations/rules are in your area. Some pharmacies will hire a person as a Pharmacy Clerk and offer training so he or she can become a Pharmacy Technician. If you are unable to find one in your area willing to do this then you have other options. You can enroll in a Pharmacy Technician training program at many community colleges. Verify that the training meets the requirements established by your state Board of Pharmacy. You can purchase some training manuals/CD's and study at home to prepare for the PTCE (Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam) offered by the PTCB. Some good books (These are the training… [cont.]

How would you become a certified aerobic instructor in the state of KS?
Q. I am a stay at home mother wanting to get out and exercise and make a little cash. I have some background in health classes, but would love to start an aerobic class, but would feel better asking people to pay if I was certified or had some extra training. Has anyone ever did the online classes?

A. There are several organizations that provide fitness certifications. One of the most popular is ACE (American Council on Exercise) and a good one for an Aerobic Instructor Certification is AFAA. Your local YMCA might also provide certifications, but you probably will have to teach at the Y if you have one. There are organizations that offer certifications online, but if you are going to actually instruct people, I highly recommend taking a course you actually have to attend and take a practical exam. You also will need to be certified in CPR to teach aerobics. Check with the American Heart Association classes locally.
