GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications: originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile) is the most popular standard for mobile telephony systems in the world. The GSM Association, its promoting industry trade organization of mobile phone carriers and manufacturers, estimates that 80% of the global mobile market uses the standard. GSM is used by over 4.3 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories. Its ubiquity enables international roaming arrangements between mobile phone operators, providing subscribers the use of their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its predecessor technologies in that both signaling and speech channels are digital, and thus GSM is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. This also facilitates the wide-spread implementation of data communication applications into the system.

The ubiquity of implementation of the GSM standard has been an advantage to both consumers, who may benefit from the ability to roam and switch carriers without replacing phones, and also to network operators, who can choose equipment from many GSM equipment vendors. GSM also pioneered low-cost implementation of the short message service (SMS), also called text messaging, which has since been supported on other mobile phone standards as well. The standard includes a worldwide emergency telephone number feature (112).

Newer versions of the standard were backward-compatible with the original GSM system. For example, Release '97 of the standard added packet data capabilities by means of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Release '99 introduced higher speed data transmission using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).

A. Good news and bad news and a tiny bit of good news... First, the good news. Yes, the network operators can actually trace a mobile's location to within a few hundred meters. And the user doesn't even have to do anything. Now the bad news... They're not going to tell you unless it's an emergency - and I mean a REAL call-the-police/ambulance /fire emergency. Even though she's a minor and your daughter and you pay the bills, those records are confidential and only the police can get them and even THEY need a warrant. Now the tiny bit of good news... The technology for what you want is developing rather rapidly and it already exists for cars for about $12/month. So once your little girl is old enough to drive in a few years (although it'll [cont.]

Can an iPhone be converted to CDMA from GSM for use on Verizon or Sprint?
Q. I understand that GSM and CDMA are two different communication languages. Can the software in the iphone be altered so that it can speak CDMA language? Does it require a hardware change? Has anyone accomplished the conversion?
Asked by sanjoseskater - Tue Apr 1 17:19:42 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your first question: can't be done. Such a conversion would require software and hardware changes, something the normal person wouldn't be able to afford, much less execute. You're better off purchasing the iPhone-like CDMA phones offered by Verizon Wireless, et al.

GSM, How big does a hole have to be in a metal box so my phone will work inside?
Q. HI, I need to put a GSM tracking device inside a metal box, but it will not work inside this box because the box is a faraday cage. So how do you work out how big a hole has to be in the box so the device will work? Will adding more holes help reception? Will this reduce the chance the thing has of logging on? Hope you can help! Nathan
Asked by Jimmy2 - Tue Aug 21 09:03:55 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Any metal blocks the signal. You can get GSM devices with external aerials to get out of the box. The theoretical minimum is a quarter of the wavelength. Phone wavelengths are 30cm or shorter. Anything where the biggest hole is less than 7cm and you won't get anything. Look it up on Google, I'm not sure about any of my details.
