In biological terms, a community is a group of interacting species sharing an environment. In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness.

In sociology, the concept of community has led to significant debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninety-four discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s. Traditionally a "community" has been defined as a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and is attributed with social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household. The word can also refer to the national community or global community.

The word "community" is derived from the Old French communité which is derived from the Latin communitas (cum, "with/together" + munus, "gift"), a broad term for fellowship or organized society.

Since the advent of the Internet, the concept of community no longer has geographical limitations, as people can now virtually gather in an online community and share common interests regardless of physical location.

What kind of community causes do you donate your time and/or money to and why?
Q. I work for a non-profit agency that works with people of all ages and abilities. We are trying to raise money for a state of the art facility for a preschool, k-12 school, 4 adult day habilitation programs, children s case management, developmental therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and a greenhouse work program for adults, as well as community gardens, and a handicap accessible playground for the community. To better our community by increasing the abilities of the most disabled people in our community so they contribute to the community (and have an income), and provide a play/picnic area for all families and children of all abilities. I am wondering what people donate to and why. It seems that there are… [cont.]

A. First of all, who are you to say that animal shelters & parks are not as worthy/needy of funding as your program? People donate to non-profits that directly effect their own lives. I donate $$ to my local community radio station. It might not seem like priority to you, but it is to me b/c I listen to that station everyday & my life would be empty without it. I also donate my time to Big Brothers Big Sisters, because it's an established, well-known organization and I am directly involved in the life of my Little Sister. Perhaps you need to publicize your organization more. Issue press releases about the work that you're doing, start a direct mail campaign, have regular events (bake sales, car washes, concerts) to get the word out. The… [cont.]

Our community is doing a fund raiser for cancer. How can we get someone famous to appear?
Q. Our community is very small and close knit. The ratio of those with cancer in our community is about 1 to every four people. Our commuinty is located in an awesome valley with major biking trails and two ski resorts. The old Hiawatha train route has been revamped into a mrvelous bike trail with over 10 tressels and 10 tunnels, one beig 1.7 miles long. We would like to organize a bike ride for cancer and donate the proceeds to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

A. Any local names, people who went to school there, or often visit? If you can combine that with somebody who has an interest aleady in your charity area, you may stand a good chance.

How can I tell if one community college is better than another or if a particular community college is good?
Q. I want to attend a community college. I have the choice narrowed to two schools--Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Virginia. Aside from trying to glean clues from their catalogs, can anyone give me some suggestions to figure out which is the better school? I mean, is their some objective source--some accrediting agency or something of the sort--that could help me tell the good schools from the bad ones or which schools do a good job of preparing students to transfer into 4 year schools and succeed once they've transferred?

A. Go visit and talk to people in programs that you are interested in. Many times you can contact the school in advance and they'll be help you get in touch with the people you would want to talk to.

  • A community is the mental and spiritual condition of knowing that the place is shared, and that the people who share the place define and limit the possibilities of each other's lives. It is the knowledge that people have of each other, their concern for each other, their trust in each other, the freedom with which they come and go among themselves.

  • Man is not willingly a political animal. The human male associates with his fellows less by desire than by habit, imitation, and the compulsion of circumstance; he does not love society so much as he fears solitude. He combines with other men because isolation endangers him, and because there are many things that can be done better together than alone; in his heart he is a solitary individual, pitted heroically against the world.
  • When the Stranger says: "What is the meaning of this city ? Do you huddle close together because you love each other?" What will you answer? "We all dwell together To make money from each other"? or "This is a community"?
