IEEE 802.11a-1999 or 802.11a is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 specification that added a higher throughput of up to 54 Mbit/s and uses the 5 GHz band. It has seen widespread worldwide implementation, particularly within the corporate workspace. The amendment has been incorporated into the published IEEE 802.11-2007 standard. 802.11 is a set of IEEE standards that govern wireless networking transmission methods. If you were sharing socuments between 2 pc's in your home that were connected wirelessly then it would be over WLAN. 802.11 is the standard by which these wireless devices (like your pc and your router) communicate with each other. The a, b, and g after their names is like their grade. The first generation were a, then the b's came out which had a better range and were faster (about 4.5 Mbit/s). Today, most devices will be 802.11g which has an even better rate of transfer at about 23 Mbit/s and n goes right up to 74 Mbit/s. So, an 802.11a/b/g/n is a means of creating a WLAN.
